- Do not promise zero risk. Promise transparency, speed, and discipline.
- Do not chase every headline. Prioritize evidence-driven action.
- Do not isolate security from business decisions. Translate technical risk into operational and financial impact.
At the board and executive level, this is a moment to reframe cybersecurity as operational resilience. The question is not whether sophisticated attacks will happen. The question is whether our systems, teams, and decision processes can absorb shocks and recover quickly.
What to Avoid in the Current Moment
A few anti-patterns are already emerging:
- Checklist theater: adding controls on paper without validating implementation
- One-time audits: treating this as a point-in-time event instead of an ongoing risk class
- All-or-nothing trust decisions: either fully banning or fully accepting tools without nuanced control design
- Communication gaps: letting technical and executive narratives drift apart
Measured leadership means resisting these extremes.
